INSPIRATION



Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian author, feminist and controversial speaker on TED X. She normally touches on the socials ills going on in Nigeria through her books. A fifth child of the six; Ngozi Adichie got inspired in writing through reading a book called ‘’Things fall apart’’ written by Chinua Achebe. She studied in the US in Communication and Political Science at Eastern Connecticut State University. She got the Master’s Degree on Creative Writing from John Hopkins University and studied History at Yale University.


She began writing her first book called ‘’Purple Hibicus on 2003. It is a story which is about a 15 year old girl, whose family is wealthy and respected but abused by a religious father. The book brought the Commonwealth writers’ prize in 2005 as the best first book in Africa. The book was shortlisted for 2004 Orange Prize as fiction. Adichie’s second novel, ‘’Half of a Yellow Sun’’ which was released on 2007 as a result of research on experiences of her parents during the Biafra war. The book became an international best seller and was awarded by Orange Broadband prize for fiction on the same year it has released.

She received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and released ‘’The Thing around Your Neck’’ which was released in 2008 had acclaimed collection of short stories and released on 2013, a story called “Americanah” which was about a young Nigerian woman studying in the United States.
